Moss Landing Power Plant, Monterey County, California.
The facility was reported to be ablaze at 3pm (PST) on 17 January 2025.
Built in 2020 and owned by Vistra Corporation, the plant is the world’s third largest battery energy storage facility, according to some estimates and is capable of generating 750MWh – enough electricity to power around 500,000 homes.
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) store power harvested from the grid, or a renewable source such as solar panels or wind turbines. In the US they are also known as ‘Grid Batteries’. Essentially, enormous banks of batteries are charged and discharged for use in local applications such as neighbouring homes and businesses or the energy is drawn down from the network at times of low demand and returned to the grid at peak times.
Monterey County Supervisor Glenn Church said that between 50,000 and 100,000 residents had been affected. In common with other emergency services, local firefighters are reported to have chosen to let the fire burn and it now appears to be subsiding.
The damage done to property and reputation in a lithium battery fire is obvious. Injury to staff and neighbours is unforgivable. When an alternative such as BSB Warehouse exists for the safe storage of these items, why would your business not want to do the right thing?
